I was sitting at my computer as usual today watching some skate stuff, catching up on this weeks media, and all of a sudden I got to thinking. Why do I keep skateboarding? I just thought of how much it has harmed me, caused me pain, gotten me in trouble with cops and so on. I know most people would label me as a filmer, but being a skateboarder comes first. Why do I love it so much though? I figured it out. What I love so much is not doing some rail trick, or jumping down some gap. What I love is that freedom you feel when you are pushing down the street, weaving through traffic, touching cars, hopping up curbs, doing "survival ollies", and just going as fast as you possibly can. I know that if you see me skating in Kali or anywhere else, you most likely won't see me stressing over a trick. You'll see swerving down main street or 1st avenue, just being a nuisance. I know that people who don't skate don't get it, and it's sad to say that even many skaters in this area don't understand the fun of just cruising. However, I am okay with that. I noticed that as I got older, I started to enjoy the basic side of skateboarding. It just feels so pure. So, skateboarding shouldn't be all about filming, or photos, and definitely not contests. It should be about the fun, the freedom, and the ability to do exactly as you please without the worry of what others may think of you. I love filming, watching gnarly skate videos, and trying tricks down some gap with my friends, but nothing will ever beat the feeling of going fast.
